What You Will See On Ecuador Galapagos Tours

Wildlife is the reason most people come, and the roster reflects it. What is the best month to visit the Galapagos?

There is no bad month, but the two seasons feel different. December to May is the warm season: calmer seas, water around 23 to 24°C, brighter skies between showers. June to November is the cool garúa season, with 19 to 22°C water, choppier crossings and more overcast days, but far more marine activity. How much does a trip to the Galapagos cost in total?

Budget roughly $1,400 to $2,200 per person for a week staying on land with three day tours, before food and drink. That covers the $200 park fee, the $20 transit card, $250 to $600 of flights from the mainland, hotels and the tours. A comparable week on a cruise starts near $3,000 and runs well past $10,000.

How many days do you need in the Galapagos?

Five full days is the realistic minimum for one island plus two or three day trips. Seven or eight lets you add a second island without spending the trip on ferries. Remember that arrival and departure days are effectively half days once flights and airport transfers are counted.

Do you need a guide for everything in the Galapagos?

At protected national park visitor sites, yes: a park-certified naturalist guide is legally required. The inhabited islands still have genuinely good sites you can visit alone, including Tortuga Bay on Santa Cruz, the Charles Darwin Research Station, Concha de Perla on Isabela and the town beaches. Those cost nothing beyond fees you have already paid.

Do US citizens need a visa for the Galapagos?

No. US citizens do not need a visa for Ecuador for stays under 90 days, and the Galapagos are part of Ecuador. You do need a passport valid for your stay, the $20 transit control card bought online beforehand, and the $200 park fee on arrival.
